The Karnataka Assembly’s Hindu Religious Institutions & Charitable Endowment (Amendment) Bill 2024 gets tanked in the Legislative Council two days after it was passed. BJP and JD(S) joined forces on Friday in a show of solidarity to defeat the Bill ahead of the General Elections. Congress which had a majority in the Lower House assured a smooth passing of the bill. However, BJP-JD(S) combined had a majority in the Upper House, thus tabling the bill. The bill was rejected by a voice vote conducted by Deputy Chairperson M K Parnesh. BJP had 35 members while the JD(S) had 8. The Congress had 29 members in the 75 member assembly. Two seats were vacant.
The bill allowed the state to collect 10% tax from temples having a revenue above Rs. 1 crore and 5% from temples having revenue between Rs. 1 crore and Rs. 10 lakh.
